Congratulations to our Co-Founder Dr. Aubrey J. Grant on his article published to the MedStar Health blog entitled “How Technology and Policy Can Help Advance Health Equity”!
In the article, Dr. Grant discusses ways technology can be of use in the healthcare system to lessen health disparities and close gaps in care. On the topic of how these disparities come to be, Dr. Grant explains that “many things contribute to an individual’s ability to access high-quality care. These can include social determinants of health (SDOH), the conditions in which people live, work, and learn. Research indicates SDOHs are responsible for 80-90% of health outcomes” (Grant 2024).
Dr. Grant goes on to explain that technology itself cannot be the only solution in solving disparities in health. According to Dr. Grant, “Developers and engineers must come from diverse backgrounds to ensure the greatest range of perspectives when building these tools, and equity must be front and center” (Grant, 2024).
Additionally, Dr. Grant shares that “MedStar Health is leading the charge on important equity issues, including programs like D.C. Safe Babies Safe Moms and its community-partnered work to stem the maternal mortality crisis.” (Grant, 2024).
